Creating A Designer Home With LED Lighting
By Zephyr and Stone
With any new build or home renovation project, your lighting decisions are as vital as any other selections in your design. While we love a feature pendant light or wall sconce, there’s one option that’s even more functional and can be integrated seamlessly into almost ANY space in your home. You guessed it, we’re talking LED strip lighting, and the functionality and integration options are endless…
Endless Options…
Integrated LED lighting is one of our favourite inclusions for practically any room in the home, especially bathrooms, laundries, kitchens and study nooks. But what makes LED lighting so versatile? LED strips are super thin and flexible, making them easy to integrate into or alongside a variety of surfaces, like cabinetry, walls, ceilings and even furniture. LED can run vertically or horizontally, in a straight line or follow a curve, and just like other lighting options, LED strips are available in varying colour temperatures from cool to warmer whites.
LED lighting integrations are endless, with the choice of higher wattages to create bright tasks or room lighting, or softer LED’s to create atmosphere by night. When incorporating them in your design, it’s vital to plan any LED lighting integrations before your electrical rough-in to ensure any cables can be installed within walls. Ready to see some of the easy ways you can utilise LED lighting in your new project?
Overheads
Integrating an LED strip into the underside of your overhead laundry cupboards is one of the most functional ways to light up a benchtop. This integration really is the definition of task lighting, as it illuminates the benchtop workspace precisely where you need it. Downlights aren’t anywhere near as effective in this instance as they’re often installed overhead and can sit behind you as you work at a bench, casting a shadow on your working surface.
Just like we’ve done below in our Contemporary Coastal Laundry, installing your LED strip towards the back of the underside of your overhead cabinets, provides optimal task lighting for worktop surfaces, without any glare!
Floating Shelf
Floating shelves are one of our go-to design inclusions for projects because they serve a functional purpose whilst adding a designer element to your space. To elevate a floating shelf even further, LED lighting can be integrated into the underside for a completely customised look, that will also make tasks a breeze. This can be incorporated into shelving anywhere in your home and is especially practical in a study nook where it can also act to light up a desk.
Bathroom Niche
A bathroom niche is a perfect way to store your shampoos and bathroom products in your shower. Not only do niches add to your bathroom storage footprint, but they’re also an opportunity to integrate LED lighting to create that luxury resort feel every time you step foot in your shower. The soft light is perfect for winding down and creating a relaxing mood, and when combined with other LED light installations, it’s possible to avoid the installation of regular downlights in the space altogether!

Mirrors
Did you know that we custom make all the LED backlit mirrors in our design projects? That’s because off-the-shelf backlit mirror options are often on the smaller side, limiting design possibilities! When creating your own LED backlit mirror, you’re not restricted by size and can opt for any mirror shape and installation to suit your space. The result is a stunning mirror that illuminates your face, making backlit mirrors perfect for applying makeup and bathroom close-ups! Whether it’s for the bathroom, bedroom or even a full-length option in your walk in wardrobe, this mirror LED lighting solution is sure to add that ‘wow’ factor to your home or design project.

Wardrobes
When considering options for where to integrate LED lighting in your home, you really can’t go past your wardrobe! Combining LED lighting with timber veneer or woodgrain timber laminates in a walk-in-robe, will highlight any timber textures and turn everyday dressing into a luxury experience! Installing the LED strip towards the front of cabinetry as we’ve done in our Melbourne Luxe walk-in-robe below, ensures the LED light isn’t obscured by clothing and hangers while also effectively lighting up the walkway. Alternatively, you can install LED strips towards the back of walk in closet cupboards, for a more moody and subtle effect.
Walls and Ceilings
Looking for a simple yet effective statement for your space? You guessed it — integrated LED lighting is one of our TOP tips for transforming simple walls or ceilings into a beautiful stand-out feature. Adding LED lighting in larger applications like in our Resort Ensuite creates a beautiful feature while providing ample lighting for the whole space! Installing LED strips alongside house tiles, stonework or timber can also highlight texture and pattern to amplify your home design.
