The Workspace

Possibly the hardest working space in your home, the laundry doesn’t have to be a full room that you can’t wait to escape. Good ventilation, a fabulously deep laundry tub and durable surfaces tic all the basic must-have boxes. Here are our top ideas to ensure that time spent here is easy-breezy.

Must-haves:

  • Drying area: a simple rail affixed between walls, or a collapsible air dryer, are ideal for hanging delicates or freshly ironed items.

  • Bench space: benchtops should be 650mm deep to accommodate a washing machine/dryer, and allow adequate space for a large sink and tap directly behind.

  • Clever cabinets: “Overhead cupboards [that lock] are great for storing chemicals out of children’s reach, and a tall cupboard will accommodate your ironing board”, suggests Ania Forster of Zephyr and Stone.

Lust-haves:

  • Windows and skylights: Natural light will boost a room’s feel-good factor and sense of space. But, if windows aren’t an option, add an overhead skylight.

  • Cohesive joinery: Bespoke joinery which mimics that of the kitchen will create a sleek and unified look throughout your home.
